Underneath the blinged-out costumes, squeaky clean white boots and sparkling sequence, are the dreams of dedicated athletes who are throwing themselves towards greatness – one baton twirl at a time. Financial setbacks are their biggest hurdle.
With only 119 days before the Eagles Majorette Club hits the fields at Centurion to participate in the Nationals Competition for 2024, our team has been drilling their hearts out; getting every throw, twirl, and hip bop in perfect sync in preparation for the first KZN competition for the season which happens this Saturday, 2 March 2024, at Mowat High School in Montclair. They currently practice on the fields at Benjamin Pine Primary School in Pinetown in the afternoons and well into the evenings sometimes. Saturdays are also full of drill training, the dedication and hard-work required from each member is significant and demanding.
The Eagles Majorette Club is a non-profit making sports team, every cent that comes to the team is used for field rental, insurance, props and uniforms. Trying to encourage girls and woman of all ages to participate in a community sport, the teams ages range from 6 years old to 48 years old. Every member absolutely loves the sense of comradery and solidarity of supporting each other every literal step of the way. Every coach is committed and paid in love and achievement only.
As you can guess, trying to get a team of 30 off to Nationals in June is going to be a big financial strain on the team who have been raising funds left, right and center through various channels to help reach their goal. R3500 per team member is quite a fiscal hurdle. Optimism is running high though; they are all determined to reach the goal. They have been participating in local markets, doing displays and selling goods and treats, and selling raffle tickets.
The Eagles Majorette Club is running 2 amazing raffles to help get them to nationals. The first competition is for a Holiday in Hermanus Western Cape, 4 nights for 4 people in a self-catering accommodation. The location has sea views, a swimming pool and so much more. Tickets are R50. Our second holiday on raffle is a prize worth over R60 000, it is a 3-night stay for 2 at the Elewana Kilindi Resort in Zanzibar. The prize includes transfers to and from the airport, Paddle boarding, Kayaking, Soft Drinks, 3 meals per day and Laundry. Exclusions are no under 16’s, Flights, alcohol and other purchases are all for the winners’ account. Tickets are R100. The draw for both raffles is happening mid-June 2024.
The team is also currently looking for sponsors, which gives the community a chance to get involved and get their brand out there. We are looking for donations of caps, tog bags, water bottles, lanyards, tracksuits and t-shirts. If this is something you or your company are keen on getting involved in we would love to wear your branded items out and about with pride.
